At an unprecedented speed, organisations are being disrupted and displaced by technology that will continue to revolutionise the workplace over the next 20 years and beyond.
Presenting at a recent Industrial Minerals Association, North America (IMA-NA) workshop, Matt Urquhart, Business Development Manager – Projects from our USA office updated delegates on the latest solutions to future proof the mining of industrial minerals.
Matt presented on the findings of Mineral Technologies experience in working with mining customers worldwide seeking to future proof their operations. He pointed to three key issues including: finding ways to reduce ore acquisition (mining) costs; economically extracting value from increasingly lower grade deposits; and minimising the environmental impacts of mining.
“In order to make serious inroads into future proofing our industry, we need to reimagine how we mine and process minerals through the application of good science,” said Matt.
Matt’s IMA-NA presentation included cases studies that demonstrated improved ore acquisition costs and increased production through the recovery of heavy minerals from live tails (end of pipe) and deposited tailings deposits.
A highlight of Matt’s presentation included the latest information about Mineral Technologies Mobile Mining Unit (MMU) which is a truckless mining method that represents the next generation of mobile dry-mining technology. Designed by a team of engineers based at Mineral Technologies Australian and USA offices, the MMU was recently commissioned and is now fully operational onsite in Florida, USA.
“The recent implementation of the MMU in the mineral sands industry is demonstrating how a high throughput, truckless ore-acquisition system has the potential to be a viable, low-cost alternative to historical truck and shovel mining methods,” said Matt.
Aligned with the new MMU technology are a range of innovative design options for easily relocatable processing (tailings retreat) plants. Matt provided an update on latest developments for relocatable plants including a case study.
“Our work in developing innovative solutions to help customers future proof mining operations continues and we are regularly sharing key outcomes with Mineral Technologies customers worldwide,” said Matt.
