MT’s South African operation sets new records

Posted by on in Blog

The South African operation of Downer’s Mineral Technologies business achieved major milestones in safety, delivery and revenue recently.

With a growing workforce based in Richards Bay, Mineral Technologies’ South African operation celebrated three-years injury free in July 2019.

Regional Operations Manager, Edwin Phiri, said the safety result was underpinned by a strong commitment to maintaining Zero Harm coupled with an individual focus by all team members to keep themselves and their workmates safe.

“We have a long and proud history in South Africa which stretches over many decades. As our business has evolved our local team has developed a deep and detailed understanding of Downer’s Zero Harm safety culture. I am proud to lead our dedicated team which has a shared commitment to ensuring safety is a major focus of our everyday working environment,” said Edwin.

In line with the record safety result, the South African operation also achieved record revenues for the 2019 financial year. Edwin said that the upturn in the mining sector across Africa, combined with Mineral Technologies industry leading separation equipment and expertise contributed to the record result. Edwin also pointed out that forecasts for the South African operation into 2020 and 2021 look set for continued growth.

Zulti South Project

Having supplied mineral processing solutions to Richards Bay Minerals - South Africa’s largest mineral sands producer and beneficiation company - for over 40 years, Mineral Technologies was engaged by HATCH to deliver detailed design for the spiral concentrator plant and separation equipment to the new Zulti South project in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province.

With detailed design for the spiral concentrator plant delivered in 2018, Mineral Technologies is now finalising delivery of close to 100 banks of MG12F and HG10H spirals to meet first commercial production which is targeted for late 2020.

Mineral Technologies General Manager, Metallurgy, Equipment and Technology, Alex de Andrade said that he was proud of the team in South Africa and excited about future opportunities.

“Congratulations to our team in South Africa for demonstrating an exemplary focus on safety as well as a commitment to actively growing the business and delivering significant new projects for customers. Safety, delivery and excellence in helping our customers succeed are the key pillars on which our business is based. I look forward to working with the team as they continue to succeed and set new records,” said Alex.
