Proudly celebrating 80 years – 1940 to 2020

Mineral Technologies is celebrating 80 years with a series of company-wide events and visits from Australia’s Prime Minister and Downer’s CEO.

Prime Minister visit
The celebrations started with a visit from the Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison in 2020 accompanied by the Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, Karen Andrews.

Alex de Andrade, General Manager, said it was an honour to welcome the Prime Minister and Minister for Industry, Science and Technology to Mineral Technologies which provided the opportunity to showcase the production facility including innovative approaches to manufacturing.

“On behalf of the MT team we were proud to showcase our Gold Coast facility which manufactures and exports Australian made separation equipment to customers in mining operations worldwide. During the visit some of the orders seen on the shop floor included equipment destined for Mozambique, Madagascar, Sierra Leone and Canada,” said Alex.

Company-wide event
The Prime Minister’s visit was followed by a company-wide event for the 200+ team which includes engineers, metallurgists, operational staff and production teams located in Australia and major mining regions worldwide. The local team joined together on the Gold Coast with international teams joining by video conference.

Recognising the extraordinary anniversary General Manager Alex de Andrade paid tribute to current and past team members who have contributed to Mineral Technologies as it has grown from a two-person operation in the 1940s based on the Gold Coast beaches to a thriving global business today. Alex also thanked customers for their continued support.

“Over the years MT has become a global leader in fine mineral separation and has been involved in most of the major mineral sands projects worldwide and a growing number of iron ore projects”, said Alex.

The celebrations included messages from Downer leaders and a keynote address from the coaching team of the Sunshine Coast Lightning netball team, of which Downer is a Principal Partner.

Speaking to the importance of team, coaches Kylee Byrne and Vicki Wilson from the Sunshine Coast Lightning presented a compelling insight into high-performance teams.

“We talk about being one club and everyone having a voice. We also ensure that we celebrate uniqueness which can sometimes be difficult to achieve and is why we have an ongoing commitment to celebrating individuals for what they bring the team”, said Kylee.

Downer CEO visit
Recognising the 80-year anniversary, Downer CEO Grant Fenn visited the Carrara head office in March.

“This 80th anniversary is a great achievement, and Mineral Technologies today is a world leader in mineral separation solutions. During my visit I’ve been impressed by the dedication and focus of the team who uphold the value of innovation and help our customers succeed. Congratulations on your achievements so far and may the team continue to deliver new technologies for the next 80 years,” said Grant.

Grant’s visit coincided with the installation of the new history wall in the reception area and the release of the Our History book which showcases highlights over the past 80 years.
